Diversity Experiences - Instructional Aide at Lincoln Elementary - MREC Morning and Afterschool Porgram - Parks and Recreations Summer Playground Leader - Family Mentorship - Visited Manchester House - Visited Ann Carlson Center
Family Mentorship During this experience I was paired with a physical therapy student from the University of Mary. We made several visits and observations at a home with a family of 3 young children. There were twin girls who were 4 years old who had autism. At the time of our visits their younger brother who was 3 who was displaying signs of autism, however no diagnosis was made at that time because it could be attributed to learned behavior from his siblings. Having the opportunity to interact with the family taught me a lot about the stress and pressure place on the families and the importance of having the necessary supports and services.
Parks and Recreation Summer Playground Leader The Parks and Recreation Summer Playground Program allowed me to work with a diverse group of children. Many of the children came from varying social backgrounds and for a majority of the children it was common for them to come from divorced households or parents who were in jail for various reasons. This experience really taught me to be intentional with my words and very mindful of the children's backgrounds and home life. Working with the Parks and Recreation Program really taught me the importance of forming relationships with the children and how much of an impact I can have on their lives by believing in them and supporting them
